Woman Of Purpose Spotlight: UK Author-Tara Ford

Bio

Tara Ford lives in Hampshire, UK with her husband, children and a naughty husky called Meika. In between writing she enjoys taking care of her numerous Koi fish, but occasionally she also has to live with a frustrated heron that frequents the garden fence and peers longingly into the well protected pond.
Tara’s writing career began at the tender age of 15 when she wrote a beautiful love story as part of her English literature homework. Her writing career came to an abrupt end at the tender age of 15 when the teacher tore up her story, exclaiming that the content of the essay was highly unsuitable material for school. Although it had not been in the realms of 50 Shades of Grey, Tara’s first attempt at a short story had been shunned.
Over 3 decades of child-rearing, fish-fostering and dog walking later, Tara has reignited her dream of writing. Her first book, Calling All Services, a women's fiction-humour story, was released in July 2013. She has always wanted to write in this genre, but until a couple of years ago, she could never quite think of a good storyline. Then a sudden illness and some time in hospital gave her the beginnings of a novel which would eventually turn out to be the first book of four in the Calling All series.
Tara has completed the second book in the series, Calling All Dentists, which she hopes to publish, early 2014. Her third novel, Calling All Customers is currently an early stage, work in progress and her plans are to release this in 2015. Tara has ideas for a further series, again in the women’s fiction-humour genre, to be written in the future. Her ultimate dream would be to write a new book each and every year.

Tara’s debut novel, Calling All Services is a peep into the lives of one family, over the course of one unusually, eventful week. A rollercoaster of emotions will have you laughing, crying and cringing as the week unfolds to reveal one disaster after another. Will the members of the Frey family ever be the same again?

Women Of Purpose Spotlight, Sucessful Author-Carole Mckee

Profile...
Carole Mckee is originally from Pittsburgh, but she has resided in Florida since 2002. Most of her books take place in the Western Pennsylvania area, the place she will always call home. She is a passionate writer, making readers feel the emotions of her characters. Her first novel, "Perfect" brought out so much emotion that she got phone calls from people who were in tears when they finished the book. She has enjoyed many fields in many areas, including being a Keypunch Operator back in the late '60's and early '70's. Carole Mckee became a Nuclear Medicine Technologist and then decided to change fields. Among her many roles , she worked as an Administrative Assistant in a Methadone clinic as well as an office manager for a couple of construction companies, and she worked as a machinist in a metal shop for a little while, just because she had never done that. She did some customer service work, but in her own words: "I was terrible at it. I can't follow a script, because I'm used to writing my own. " When out of work, she signed on with temp agencies and got lots of experience in various fields. In addition to her Nuclear Medicine degree, she has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and a Masters of Arts in Behavioral Health Sciences with a concentration in School Counseling. She became a member of Chi Sigma Iota in 2008. As a result of severe back pain, Carole Mckee does not work outside her home any more, but she still tutors occasionally. She said, "I love to write and I will continue to write until my fingers fall off-God forbid."

Love, Relationship and Family...

In 1969 she married her first husband. She was in love, but that soon wore off when she realized that she couldn't depend on him. She divorced and remarried-from bad to worse! She divorced him and never looked back. Her first marriage produced her beloved children-Terra and Eric. Unfortunately, Eric passed away in 2002 from a terminal bone marrow disease. That is what prompted her to leave Pennsylvania and move to a warmer climate. In her own words: "His death devastated me and I had to get my head on straight." A change of scenery seemed like a good move, and it was. Never once did she regret making that move. Eric left a pregnant wife who gave birth to her grandson, Eric four and a half months later. Her daughter, Terra is doing well and lives in salt Lake City, Utah. Carole Mckee leads a quiet life in Florida, spending her days answering emails, writing, and spending time with friends.  Angel, her adorable cat, is a constant companion around the house.

Her Charities...
Her favorite charities are: The Humane Society of the United States, PETA, and ASPCA, and she partners with The Humane Society of Pinellas County.

Interview With Carole Mckee

-->
1: We know you are a Writer, but who is Carole McKee?

I’m not sure who I am or who I ever wanted to be. I know that as an older person I have accepted myself just the way I am, but when I was younger, I was never happy being me. I’ve worked at several different jobs, excelled at most of them, but never was truly happy doing them. Until I started writing, that is. Writing is my true passion and I should have started many years ago. I lacked the confidence before now. I always thought a writer had to be a college grad, so I went to college, and earned more than one degree, including a Master’s in Behavioral Health Science. Only then did I feel qualified to write.

2: What or who motivated you to write?

Nobody actually motivated me or encouraged me--ever. When my dog died, the person who cremated him suggested I write about him because he was such an extraordinary dog. So I did, and the short story appeared in a dog magazine. Then in college, all the professors and instructors praised my writing ability when I turned in the required papers. I remember my Sociology instructor wrote on my paper when I turned in my autobiography for a final grade, that I had real talent in writing and that I should pursue it, so maybe he is the one who motivated me.

3: When have you been most satisfied in your life?

Right now. I am completely contented and happy.

4: Have you always aspired to be a Writer?

Yes, well, like I mentioned before, I didn’t have any confidence. I always wanted to be a writer, but just felt I couldn’t possibly be good enough. Stories were always just popping into my head, and one day I just said, “I can do this.” And my first novel “Perfect” was born!

5: You have many life experiences. What advice would you give to young mothers, wives, and young women in general?

Oh wow! Young mothers--if you can, stay home with your kids. I never could, and I regret it. Wives--choose wisely before you become a wife. I didn’t, and I regret that. Young women in general? Decide who you are or who you want to be, and be it. Don’t let anybody tell you you’re not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough. Just remember another person’s words don’t have to be your destiny. I learned that many years too late.

6: In your book Coming Home, which is beautifully written, is it inspired by your own life experiences?

Well, not exactly. I am so against the  bullying that goes on in schools. The rumor mills are a form of bullying and they can really destroy a girl’s life. I had seen innocent young girl’s reputations ruined by jealous girls who felt threatened by them--especially if the girl in the rumor was really pretty.

7. You recently launched Consequences, without giving away any spoiler alerts, tell us a bit about it.

“Consequences” is the 4th book of the “Choices” series. It ties up all the loose ends and puts everyone “right” in their world. But the book can be enjoyed without reading the first three. I wrote it because readers asked for it. I just received a very nice letter from a lady who read “Consequences” but didn’t read the first three. She said she loved the book and because she liked my writing would probably go back and buy the other three.

8. What does success mean to Carole McKee?

I sigh here. I certainly don’t believe that wealth is the ultimate success. I live very moderately--a no frills kind of life--but I’m happy. I believe if a person is happy in what he or she does, that’s  success.

9. Of spirituality and God, what is your stance?

Well, of course I believe in God. I am of a Christian faith, but I’m not sure I agree with all of their teachings. I believe God is merciful and forgiving and kind, and I don’t believe He would condemn any of His children to a place called Hell.

10. There is a call worldwide for Women to be more empowered, are Women at a disadvantage?

Of course they are at a disadvantage. I have been in the corporate world. I have seen men promoting men, passing over good, intelligent women. It’s the “Boys’ Club” mentality. Too many men in higher positions feel that a person doesn’t have to have much on the ball, he just has to be male. If he plays racquetball or can shoot hoops, all the better. I had a job once where the men took long lunch hours and our male boss gave us women fifteen minutes to go out and grab something to eat and bring it back to eat at our desks while we worked. When the guys were late for work, he covered for them, and docked the women if they were late. Of course, that was rare. We were rarely late.

11. There are people we meet who makes life magical, what principles do you consider relevant to sustaining good, healthy and wholesome relationships with others?

Two things that come to mind are kindness and loyalty. To my friends and family, I am extremely loyal. I’m there for them no matter what. And I have been told that I am very kind. I can’t hurt anybody, verbally or physically. Honesty is important, too. When someone wants an honest opinion from me, they get it, but if my opinion isn’t a good one, I always remember to say something positive along with it.

I live my life believing that we are all brothers And sisters, and we are here for each other. I wish everyone believed it.

12: Are you working on any new projects that your fans can look out for?

Yes, I am. I am working on a series now. I have two done, and I am writing the third book. The first one is at my editor’s. The main characters in this series are Storm Galloway and Kyla Sanford. Lots of stuff going on!

Woman Of Purpose Spotlight: Managing Director & CEO, Makada Haye

Makada A. Haye
Female Entrepreneur

Makada Haye Entrepreneur, Statistic Breaker

Contemporary Jamaica is full of success stories of our athletes, academics and states men and women. In this, our fiftieth year of independence from Great Britain, it is the ingenuity and creativity of our young people that the country needs to guide it through the next fifty years. Norman W Manley said that his generation had sought and won political independence and that the next generation should seek to attain economic independence. Such a challenge is being answered by young entrepreneurs such as Makada Haye. If the name rings a bell it’s because she is a Production Assistant at Kool 97 FM.

But that is just one of the many faces of the ambidextrous and industrious Makada Haye. At 30 she has already established herself as a player in the local entertainment scene with the March 2010 formation of Your Events and Entertainment Specialist (Y.E.E.S) Ltd. March is a very important month for Makada as it is the month in which she gave birth to her two boys, 12 year old Damari and 5 year old Sekani; March is also the birth month of her celebrity father, George Bancroft Haye, otherwise known as ‘Early B’ a founding member of the vintage reggae group Wailing Souls.

Having grown up in the tough inner-city community of Water House, the inspiration for her father’s 1981 hit Fire House Rock, Makada is used to challenges and has used them to be the inspiration and drive for her career and entrepreneurial initiatives.

A past student of the Tivoli Garden High School, Makada had a keen interest in the Arts and even started her own singing group, having been bitten by the song bug inherited from her father. However, after leaving high school and having to assist with her father’s concern over the ownership and copyright of his own musical works, Makada set her sights on becoming an authority and a moving force in the local entertainment sector. As such, she enrolled in the Vocational Training and Development Institute (VTDI) programme for Entertainment and Events Management at the Gordon Town campus, while working full-time as an Administrative Assistant.

While she read for the Diploma, Makada was an active participant in the production and staging of several high profile events including Saint International’s Style Week Jamaica in May 2006; International Reggae Day 2006 and she was also a part of the coordination team that executed dancehall artists D’Angel and Beeni Man’s wedding. Her programme also allowed her to intern at KOOL 97 FM and her flair for production resulted in her being asked to stay on at the radio station.

At KOOL 97 Makada became more exposed to the planning and execution of public events including outside broadcasts, concerts and even the popular Blue Mountain Adventure tour. She had an idea….. What about using all her training and practical experience and her now widened network of artistes, promoters, small businesses and event planners and form her own business?

With the advice and art design from an associate the idea of a positive and progressive sounding YEES was formed as being an events planning company, created to bring to life unique concepts to events and new approaches to entertainment marketing in Jamaica.

The company currently concentrates on three main areas: Production and Event Management; Event Planning and Artist Management/Bookings.

Events hosted by Y.E.E.S include the inaugural staging of Cosmo-Topia a first of its kind cosmetic expo in 2011 and TRENDZ: The Xpo 2011-2013. Two performing artists, Unstoppable Fyrh and DJ Maximu have been signed as talents of Y.E.E.S and both artists have songs and videos which have received good rotation on the local and international charts.

She is also one of those who believe that she must lead by example and has been the inspiration for other young women from humble beginnings as well as up and coming female entrepreneurs. She has already recorded voice over commercials for FLOW and has been the face of a major Scotia Bank and Grace Cook Soup campaigns. To top it all off, she is now in the process of completing her first book which focuses on entertainment.

Makada has said that what motivates her most is when she comes upon a seemingly insurmountable challenge or when someone tells her that she cannot do something or is not good enough “I will show you that I can. I don’t consider myself to be better than anyone. I however consider myself to be far better than what society had originally perceived me to be”. Coming from the ghetto is not a curse. The ghetto is a state of mind not a lifestyle.  Having broken the cycle of the ghetto I am a statistic breaker!

Woman Of Purpose Spotlight: Entrepreneur, Stacia A. Davidson

I was thrilled and excited to feature Stacia A. Davidson on Women, Beauty, Purpose And Empowerment. She granted me an exclusive interview that I have shared with you below:

1: Winsome: Tell us a little about who Stacia A. Davidson is and what is your vision/mission:

Stacia: I refer to myself as a "Dream Warrior" as I will fight relentlessly to ensure my dreams are realized.

My ambition is to remain happy. I am happiest when I am pursuing a dream and living a balanced life. I am excited at the possibility of bringing a new idea to life, sharing quality time with the people I love and competing whether in sports or otherwise. Making my brands Yaad Trendz and Natural Icon successful are the dreams that fuel my passion and keep me going.

I am unique because I am enterprising, strong in faith and I can stay positive even in adversity. My unique take on life is that happiness is the journey. As such, I live happily in the present and I am forever grateful. I consider myself innovative and resourceful as I am able to use what I have at my disposal and turn it into something great and usable. I believe that my purpose is to motivate and empower women to live happy fulfilling lives.

2: Winsome: What inspired you to become a designer/entrepreneur?

Stacia: I started creating outfits while at University when I wanted to attend events but just didn't have the money to buy a new outfit. I would transform clothes that I already had and turn them into totally new designs. Necessity is the mother of invention and re-creating and up-cycling clothes fastly became a hobby of mine. It was the positive reviews of friends and onlookers that encouraged me to make a business out of it.

I believe in doing what gives me fulfillment and makes me happy. Also, my father was self-employed so I believe I had already grown with that influence of wanting to have my own business. Besides, I’m a problem solver by nature and that’s really what an entrepreneur does. Entrepreneurs know that behind every frustration is a new product or service.

3: Winsome: What are the biggest challenges you have encountered in pursuit of your dreams and purpose?

Stacia: My biggest challenges were access to capital/raising equity, lack of sufficient and steady income and making ill-informed decisions and mistakes that cost me valuable time and money. The road of a Dream Warrior is also a lonely one. It’s the road less travelled. It’s so much safer to get a job rather than being the one to create jobs for others. One of my biggest challenges initially was keeping my spark and passion alive when it would have been easier to give up. It’s understandably hard for people to keep believing in your dreams when they don’t see any real fruits bearing. Negative and doubtful comments can be harsh and depressing but you really do have to stay positive and fight for your dreams. You have to be that positive force and warrior for yourself. Thankfully, now I have a network of like minded individuals from the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship Caribbean that I can call on for support and advice etc. Iron sharpens iron so I’m really grateful for such a network. Also, it’s an ongoing learning process so even though I’ve learned from my earlier bad decisions and mistakes, there’s always so much more to learn.

4: Winsome: How do you maintain focus on your goals and what really keeps you going?

Stacia: Faith in God, Belief in my dreams, supportive network and just the excitement of accomplishing what I set out to do keep me going.

5: Winsome: What advice would you give to women leaders who have gone into business or would like to, but do not know how to take the first step?

Stacia: Just Do it! That’s really my advice. Make sure you are passionate about it then make the decision to do it. Passion begets persistence and persistence begets success. People tend to overthink things and think themselves out of taking the plunge. The excuse is always that it’s too risky or it’s not the right time but anything that you go into without preparation and knowledge is risky and there will never be a right time so one has to just decide to do it then do it.

When you have decided that you are going to go into business, it’s important that you research the industry or field that you want to go into. Is it overcrowded? Is it profitable? What value are you bringing to the industry? Who are your competitors? What would you be doing differently or better than them? I’ve learned that if you think the competition can do a better job than you then you aren’t properly positioned to exploit your strengths. What’s your angle? Find a way to apply your strengths, talents and passion in a way that no one else is doing or no one else is doing well

6: Winsome: What advice would you give to women who are trying to "connect" with their true purpose in life?

Stacia: I remember reading the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur and the author suggested that if you want to know what your true passion is in life you have to evaluate yourself. Ask yourself what activities bring you the most joy, happiness and satisfaction? What would you volunteer to do simply because of your love for it? What makes you lose track of time, complete tasks almost effortlessly, and come out energized? When you are talking to friends, what is the one subject that you can go on and on about until they are rolling their eyes? The answers to those questions can give some insight to what your true passion(s) are.

7: Winsome: Of spirituality and God, how critical is God in pursuing our goals and life?

Stacia: I believe in living a balanced life and, for me, all pieces of the puzzle must fit together. I must cater to all aspects of my being, that is, the physical, spiritual, emotional and mental. If one area is lacking then there’s an emptiness. My belief in God, prayer and meditation help to fuel my faith and passion to follow my dreams.

8: Winsome: What are 5 final things you need women to remember?

Stacia: The 5 things I would want women to remember come in the form of general life lessons that I’ve learned not just from and for business but from and for relationships:

  • Life is a series of decisions. Don’t be afraid to make the wrong decisions. Failure is not final.
  • Don’t let the fear of rejection stifle your potential/progress.
  • Love is a verb. If you are confused about how he feels for you, it’s because he is confused. If he loves you, you will KNOW by his actions.
  • Forgotten ink is better than the best memory.
  • Love yourself. Take care of yourself.
