Woman Of Purpose Spotlight: Author-Tina Brown

Tina Brown has always thought of herself as being a little different from most people in terms of the way her mind works.  While it's true that she's an educated, professional, black woman, who has an AWESOME relationship with the LORD; she still struggles with truly understanding WHO she really is, beyond the labels that others have given her.

 Through the journey of authorship, she is beginning to appreciate her life experiences and recognize how it has shaped the many levels of her personality.

 But of course, in her own words: "I am still a work in progress!"
Currently, Tina Brown lives in Stroudsburg, PA with her daughter. She is  a Human Factors Engineer by day,  and an Author by night. Her first book, A Life Not My Own, is the story of her childhood and young adult life. There's love, loss, loneliness, triumph and more within the pages.
When you read her book, YOU will to feel as if you are just having a chat with the author. She said: "I want YOU to feel what I describe in the book. I want YOU to know that ALL things are possible with perseverance and God's help! My next story is created from conversations that my grandma and I have had over the years. So far, I like how the characters and the storyline are unfolding".



Her memoirs take readers on the journey of her troubled childhood and exciting young adult life.  
When you read this extremely poignant book, expect to be touched as the words jump off the pages.

Interview With Tina Brown:

1: Tell us a little about who Tina Brown is and what is your vision/mission:

I am Mom, FT worker, PT writer and Christian. I've always envisioned myself as a Helper. Doesn't matter what's involved.  I feel most at peace when I know that I've done the best I can at helping others.   I hope that my book will allow me to reach the many people who are struggling in so many different ways.  I want to provide words of encouragement, but more importantly, real (no joke) tools that can be used to over-come the obstacles they face... 

2: What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

There's just no getting around that fact that we need money to live.   For most of us, that means working for someone else.   That's OK, but at times, it can be emotionally and mentally exhausting.  I like the idea of doing my own thing, even if its only on a part-time basis to supplement my FT position, (which I love).

3: What advice would you give to women leaders who have gone into business or would like to, but do not know how to take the first step?

First, develop a realistic plan for achieving your goals, envision yourself achieving those goals, and surround yourself with positive people. Too often we allow the naysayers to destroy our dreams.  Know that all things are possible IF you're willing to work hard and NEVER get up. 
4: What advice would you give to women who are trying to "connect" with their true purpose in life? Be quiet and listen! I believe that we are all here for a purpose.   Sometimes our purpose is so far from what we believe possible, we struggle to accept it. Just know that if you are truly called, there's no running away.   There's someone out there, maybe even lots of people out there, waiting for you to do the work that so many before you have prepared the way.  Hence, the title of my book, A Life Not My Own.

5: What are 5 final things you need women to remember?
  •  We can do all these through Christ who strengthens us.
  •  Nothing is impossible if you will just hold on
  •  You are never alone
  •  Find strength in your struggle.
  •  God willing, tomorrow is coming, so ya might as well be prepared for it.

My Interview with Eloivene Blake of Write Right International

1.    How did you get your start in your business?

I have been an editor and writer pretty much since high school. I realized early on that I have a special affinity for language, particularly as I was regularly complimented on my diction and elocution. Subsequently, there were several classmates who would frequently ask for my assistance with their English assignments. This of course led to me earning pocket change from those who weren’t my friends. 
However, I didn’t take it seriously until I got internet access and discovered freelance websites. Being a freelance writer and editor was a great way to earn extra money and was something I did throughout university and even later when I had a full time job. So 14 years, numerous clients and several corporate jobs later; I decided to take the plunge and start Write Right International.  
A desire for independence and entrepreneurship was also a pressing factor as well as the encouragement of those who were already my clients.

2. In what ways do you think you can make a contribution to the field of Writing and Editing?

I have been and always will be an avid reader. This translates to business and means that I devour all the latest articles and stories on the most effective tools and techniques in the industry. This enables me to be able to offer my clients the very best and most cutting edge advice and services. 

3. How do you define your personal brand?

I like to think of myself as persevering, despite life’s setbacks I try to never give up on my dream. It’s not easy to have to hit the reset button but I remind myself that I am fighter and that’s something that I am most proud of.  
   
4. Success means many different things to people. What does success really mean to you? 

Success means self-actualization. It represents being at peace with me and my potential and knowing that I have accomplished a meaningful life.  At the end of it all success means being happy.

5. What are five critical success lessons you have learnt? 

  • If at first you try and don’t succeed, then try, try … and try again. One of my earliest and most favourite nursery rhymes that still holds true today and has served me well. We are not all going to succeed on the first try and it is important to be perseverant.
  • Carpe Diem - never put off for tomorrow what can be accomplished today.
  • Be fierce and don't be afraid to go after what you want.
  • Read and keep your mind open to new ideas and opportunities.
  • Believe in yourself – the only way to find if you can do something is to try and actually do it.
  
6. What motivates you to go the extra-mile? 

Pride in my work and my reputation pushes me to offer my best and go the extra-mile every time.

7. The book industry has seen many changes in recent times. Why do you suppose more people are opting to self-publish rather than traditional publishing?

Creative control has often been a main point of contention between authors and publishing professionals and self-publishing allows full control to remain in the hands of the author. There is also the matter of higher royalties and keeping a significantly higher amount from the sale of each book. These two factors mean that many authors no longer feel the need to go the traditional publishing route.

8. We are living in a digital age where tablets and e-readers are quite popular? Are you in favour of e-books or paperbacks?

I use to own rows and rows of paperback books until I bought my first e-reader. Let’s just say that if you ask me to name my favourite piece of technology, it would be my e-reader. I can’t live without it.

9. I know you are an avid reader. What is your favourite genre? What type of authors are you willing to work with?

I am an eclectic reader so it’s hard to really pick a favourite genre and as such I am willing to work with all types of authors; from creative writers, to non-fiction or academic writers.

10. Are you driven by faith or facts? 

I rely on facts and that is generally how I live my life. While faith is a beautiful concept I try to be as logical as possible in my decision making.

11. What advice would you give to women who want to pursue their passion, but is uncertain how to take the first step?

Research and more research; find out everything you can about your chosen industry and conduct a feasibility study. If you not sure about where to find information, speak to someone. There is the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) one of the few organizations that offers assistance to potential entrepreneurs.

I was thrilled and excited to feature Stacia A. Davidson on Women, Beauty, Purpose And Empowerment. She granted me an exclusive interview that I have shared with you below:



1: Winsome: Tell us a little about who Stacia A. Davidson is and what is your vision/mission:

Stacia: I refer to myself as a "Dream Warrior" as I will fight relentlessly to ensure my dreams are realized.

My ambition is to remain happy. I am happiest when I am pursuing a dream and living a balanced life. I am excited at the possibility of bringing a new idea to life, sharing quality time with the people I love and competing whether in sports or otherwise. Making my brands Yaad Trendz and Natural Icon successful are the dreams that fuel my passion and keep me going.

I am unique because I am enterprising, strong in faith and I can stay positive even in adversity. My unique take on life is that happiness is the journey. As such, I live happily in the present and I am forever grateful. I consider myself innovative and resourceful as I am able to use what I have at my disposal and turn it into something great and usable. I believe that my purpose is to motivate and empower women to live happy fulfilling lives.


2: Winsome: What inspired you to become a designer/entrepreneur?

Stacia: I started creating outfits while at University when I wanted to attend events but just didn't have the money to buy a new outfit. I would transform clothes that I already had and turn them into totally new designs. Necessity is the mother of invention and re-creating and up-cycling clothes fastly became a hobby of mine. It was the positive reviews of friends and onlookers that encouraged me to make a business out of it.

I believe in doing what gives me fulfillment and makes me happy. Also, my father was self-employed so I believe I had already grown with that influence of wanting to have my own business. Besides, I’m a problem solver by nature and that’s really what an entrepreneur does. Entrepreneurs know that behind every frustration is a new product or service.



3: Winsome: What are the biggest challenges you have encountered in pursuit of your dreams and purpose?

Stacia: My biggest challenges were access to capital/raising equity, lack of sufficient and steady income and making ill-informed decisions and mistakes that cost me valuable time and money. The road of a Dream Warrior is also a lonely one. It’s the road less travelled. It’s so much safer to get a job rather than being the one to create jobs for others. One of my biggest challenges initially was keeping my spark and passion alive when it would have been easier to give up. It’s understandably hard for people to keep believing in your dreams when they don’t see any real fruits bearing. Negative and doubtful comments can be harsh and depressing but you really do have to stay positive and fight for your dreams. You have to be that positive force and warrior for yourself. Thankfully, now I have a network of like minded individuals from the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship Caribbean that I can call on for support and advice etc. Iron sharpens iron so I’m really grateful for such a network. Also, it’s an ongoing learning process so even though I’ve learned from my earlier bad decisions and mistakes, there’s always so much more to learn.


 
4: Winsome: How do you maintain focus on your goals and what really keeps you going?

Stacia: Faith in God, Belief in my dreams, supportive network and just the excitement of accomplishing what I set out to do keep me going.

5: Winsome: What advice would you give to women leaders who have gone into business or would like to, but do not know how to take the first step?

Stacia: Just Do it! That’s really my advice. Make sure you are passionate about it then make the decision to do it. Passion begets persistence and persistence begets success. People tend to overthink things and think themselves out of taking the plunge. The excuse is always that it’s too risky or it’s not the right time but anything that you go into without preparation and knowledge is risky and there will never be a right time so one has to just decide to do it then do it. 

When you have decided that you are going to go into business, it’s important that you research the industry or field that you want to go into. Is it overcrowded? Is it profitable? What value are you bringing to the industry? Who are your competitors? What would you be doing differently or better than them? I’ve learned that if you think the competition can do a better job than you then you aren’t properly positioned to exploit your strengths. What’s your angle? Find a way to apply your strengths, talents and passion in a way that no one else is doing or no one else is doing well



6: Winsome: What advice would you give to women who are trying to "connect" with their true purpose in life?

Stacia: I remember reading the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur and the author suggested that if you want to know what your true passion is in life you have to evaluate yourself. Ask yourself what activities bring you the most joy, happiness and satisfaction? What would you volunteer to do simply because of your love for it? What makes you lose track of time, complete tasks almost effortlessly, and come out energized? When you are talking to friends, what is the one subject that you can go on and on about until they are rolling their eyes? The answers to those questions can give some insight to what your true passion(s) are.





7: Winsome: Of spirituality and God, how critical is God in pursuing our goals and life?

Stacia: I believe in living a balanced life and, for me, all pieces of the puzzle must fit together. I must cater to all aspects of my being, that is, the physical, spiritual, emotional and mental. If one area is lacking then there’s an emptiness. My belief in God, prayer and meditation help to fuel my faith and passion to follow my dreams.

8: Winsome: What are 5 final things you need women to remember?

Stacia: The 5 things I would want women to remember come in the form of general life lessons that I’ve learned not just from and for business but from and for relationships:

  • Life is a series of decisions. Don’t be afraid to make the wrong decisions. Failure is not final.
  • Don’t let the fear of rejection stifle your potential/progress.
  • Love is a verb. If you are confused about how he feels for you, it’s because he is confused. If he loves you, you will KNOW by his actions.
  • Forgotten ink is better than the best memory.
  • Love yourself. Take care of yourself.
