Woman of Purpose Spotlight and Interview, Director of J.Monique's Naturals-Julianna Gardener

Her Bio:

Beautiful, empowered, enterprising and a true Woman of Purpose, Julianna Gardener was born on April 15, 1983 in the rural town of  Brown's Town, St. Ann. Most of her childhood was spent reading or spending time with her grandmother whom she loved dearly. Her mother struggled financially raising both her and her brother and she motivated Julianna to work hard and to dream big. Despite the many challenges, she was able to complete a Bachelor's Degree at the University of the West Indies in Literature and Political Science. She then spent the next 2 years working as a Flight Attendant with Air Jamaica and then at Cable & Wireless Ltd.

After leaving Jamaica, she enrolled at the Florida International University to pursue graduate studies in Public Administration. Since 2009, Julianna served as an Educational Coordinator, monitoring after-school curriculum and testing procedures for foster youth in Florida and California. This opportunity has been humbling as well as an emotional one as she was able to work with so many disadvantaged youth, many with promise and potential.

In 2012, she founded J. Monique's Naturals, an all-natural and organic hair and skincare line. Her main goal is  to create products that are beneficial to individuals and the environment; void of harmful chemicals that can devastate the skin. She believes that everyone should have the opportunity to live well and so, she strive to make the products cost-effective and affordable so that each person can enjoy a more natural and sustainable life.

My Interview With Juliana:

1. Winsome: What do you think of the fact that women sometimes downplay their accomplishments or do I dare say, play it too safe in business?

Julianna: Some women, unfortunately shield their success in business out of fear. The fear of being rejected or being considered not good enough or equal to their male counterparts. However, women are beautiful, smart and can be successful all at once. We do not have to disguise our true selves to make others comfortable. Our accolades and accomplishments should never be 'dumbed' down to accommodate someone else's convenience. The real secret of a woman's success should not be the act of sealing her lips but celebrating her accomplishments.

2. Winsome: To who or what do you attribute your success?

Julianna: I owe my success to the determination and sacrifices of my mother. She  unknowingly created so many opportunities for me by always ensuring that tuition was paid, food was on the table to eat, and that motivation  and hope  was constant. For all the times I wanted to quit, I only had to remind myself of the sacrifices she made to keep on going.

3. Winsome: How has being an entrepreneur transformed the way you experience life?

Julianna: Becoming an entrepreneur has changed everything! Since embarking on this venture, I have been able to see life from so many different angles I was never privy of. For me, it became less about starting and having  a business. The day to day operations and planning were simply about seeing opportunities where others would see obstacles. I came to realize that  entrepreneurs have to work to adapt ideas into remarkable things and that the most important enterprise was life itself, never the business.

4. Winsome: How do you manage to stay focused on your goals when you encounter challenges?

Julianna: When challenges arise, I maintain my focus by never forgetting my initial goals and remaining determined. I couple that with lots of exercise and prayer.

5. Winsome: Of Spirituality and God?

Julianna: God is the beginning and the end in my life. I am very spiritual and try to maintain a personal relationship with my Creator. I love the Lord so much, so very much. There are no words to describe what he is to me and what he has been for me. There is no greater assurance than to know Jesus is yours, and you are his.

7. Winsome: What are some key things you need women to remember about how critical it is to pursue their purpose?

Julianna:
 1. Pursuing your purpose leads to a greater understanding of self.

2. It allows for spiritual, intellectual and emotional growth.

3. Pursuing a purpose creates inner growth which leads to a greater capacity to give to others.

4. As you seek your purpose, that quest will evolve and responsibilities and goals will change and embody the final true purpose of your being.

5. Pursuing a purpose allows you to dwell in possibilities and to unearth fulfillment.
